The outbreak of the Second Punic War in 218 BCE marked a transformative era for Emporion, as the ancient Phocian colony allied with Rome against the Carthaginian threat. This strategic partnership led to the first Roman landing on the Iberian Peninsula, commanded by Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio, near the city’s harbor. Although the region later faced local Iberian revolts suppressed by the consul Cato, the eventual consolidation of Roman military presence ushered in a period of remarkable prosperity. Operating as an allied city with significant independence, Emporion became a vital hub within Italic trade circuits, sparking a profound urban renewal and the architectural transformation of its old Neapolis core.
