Statue of Aphrodite. Marble, 2nd c. BCE.
Beauty, sensuality, desire... such was Aphrodite. Clothed or nude, her image always exuded raw femininity. In contrast to the unabashed display of male nudity, veils, tunics and cloaks were used as signs of domestic confinement and concealment, symbols of female virtue. The flowing cloth disguised the seduction hidden beneath.
Exhibited in the Madrid National Archaeological Museum, Madrid, Spain.
