The museum explanation reads: "THE GEARS AND THE INSCRIPTIONS
The Mechanism consists of scales, dials, axles, pointers and inscriptions on many of its plates, including the front and back covers. As suggested by early 20th century epigraphists, these inscriptions are something like an "owner's manual". The setting of these inscriptions into the context of ancient astronomy, in conjunction with examination of the remaining mechanical parts (gears, axles, scales, diats etc) enables recent researchers to be confident about the calendrical and astronomical functions of much of the surviving device. But an important part of the Mechanism is missing, and the research on some of its functions relies to a large extent on the interpretation of the inscriptions."
