Mycenaean krater from Cyprus. 1350 - 1250 BCE.
his large Cypriot wine vessel, or krater, is crafted from red clay with a buff slip and features a symmetrical scene of a two-horse chariot driven by two men. Positioned before each chariot are two males engaged in a belt-wrestling contest—an Oriental sport where opponents are strapped together at the waist—notably depicted with exaggerated buttocks to signify physical strain and arm gestures reminiscent of sparring boxers.
