Nike participating in the victory libation. 350-325 BCE.
Marble base of a choregic tripod
Found in the ancient Street of the Tripods in Athens, between the Theatre of Dionysos Eleuthereus and the choregic monument of Lysikrates.
The main side has a depiction of Dionysos in the type of the Sardanapalos, but without a beard.
On the other sides are depictions of Nike participating in the victory libation. The base supported the bronze tripod that was the prize awarded to the choregos for his victory in the dramatic contests.
Some scholars attribute the work to Praxiteles or his workshop, though others disassociate it completely from the style of Praxiteles.
The base has been dated from the 4th to the 1st c. BC, the most probable date being 350-325 BC.
