Reconstruction of the eastern fortification area of Town V

Exhibited at the Aegina Kolona Archaeological Museum, Aegina Island, Greece. “For the first time the Kolona settlement of the”Early Helladic III”, stage 2 is characterised by consistent overall planning, which is primarily visible within the area close to the fortifications. The settlement was obviously built from scratch within a short space of time according to a general scheme. Largely standardized terraced houses with two or three rooms and with an open portico which were combined to larger units, replaced the former differently designed individual houses. For the first time a fortification wall, which cuts the settlement off from the landward side, can be determined with certainty. The wall is strengthened by protruding semicircular towers in which, in the south and probably also in the north, entrances are placed.
This settlement phase came to an end due to a great fire, which is possibly to be seen as the consequence of an invasion by an enemy. Exhibited at the Aegina Kolona Archaeological Museum, Aegina Island, Greece.
