Piriform Stirrup Jar with Octopus

Late Minoan III (14th–12th Century BCE)
A tall, piriform ceramic stirrup jar from the cemetery at Kritsa, dating to 1400–1100 BCE. The central decorative motif is a large octopus with stylized, symmetrically arranged tentacles that drape elegantly over the vessel's shoulder. The large, hypnotic eyes and the fine dot-filling (stippling) between them are characteristic of the refined local workshops of the Mirabello region during the final centuries of the Minoan civilization.
Πήλινος ψευδόστομος αμφορέας με απιοειδές σχήμα από το νεκροταφείο της Κριτσάς, που χρονολογείται στον 14ο–12ο αι. π.Χ. Το κεντρικό διακοσμητικό θέμα είναι ένα μεγάλο χταπόδι με σχηματοποιημένους, συμμετρικά τοποθετημένους πλοκάμους που απλώνονται κομψά στον ώμο του αγγείου. Τα μεγάλα, υπνωτιστικά μάτια και το λεπτό στικτό γέμισμα ανάμεσά τους είναι χαρακτηριστικά των εκλεπτυσμένων τοπικών εργαστηρίων της περιοχής του Μεραμπέλλου κατά τους τελευταίους αιώνες του μινωικού πολιτισμού.
