The Sitia Votive Deposit

Period: Geometric-Orientalizing (mid-8th–7th Century BCE)
A comprehensive assembly of terracotta votive offerings discovered in a deposit in Sitia, dating to the 8th–7th Century BCE. The collection is dominated by figures and heads rendered in the Daedalic style, characterized by triangular faces and "layered" hairstyles. The display includes complete figurines with cylindrical bodies and numerous individual heads that were originally attached via dowels. These offerings, many of which still bear traces of blue and black pigment, were dedicated by worshippers in a local sanctuary during a period of intense artistic and cultural transition in Crete.
Μια ολοκληρωμένη συλλογή πήλινων αναθημάτων που ανακαλύφθηκαν σε αποθέτη της Σητείας, και χρονολογούνται στον 8ο–7ο αι. π.Χ. Στην έκθεση δεσπόζουν μορφές και κεφαλές αποδοσμένες στον δαιδαλικό ρυθμό, ο οποίος διακρίνεται από τα τριγωνικά πρόσωπα και την κλιμακωτή κόμμωση. Η συλλογή περιλαμβάνει ακέραια ειδώλια με κυλινδρικό σώμα και πλήθος μεμονωμένων κεφαλών που αρχικά ήταν προσαρμοσμένες με πίρους. Τα αναθήματα αυτά, πολλά από τα οποία διατηρούν ίχνη γαλάζιου και μαύρου χρώματος, αφιερώθηκαν από πιστούς σε τοπικό ιερό κατά τη διάρκεια μιας περιόδου έντονων καλλιτεχνικών και πολιτισμικών μεταβολών στην Κρήτη.
