Inscribed Offering Table Fragments

These fragments belong to stone "offering tables" found at the prominent peak sanctuary of Petsofas. They are incised with characters of the Linear A script, the undeciphered writing system of the Minoan palatial civilization. Unlike the administrative Linear A tablets found in palaces, inscriptions on stone vessels are almost exclusively religious, often repeating specific sequences of signs known as the "Libation Formula." The use of a permanent medium like steatite for these inscriptions suggests that the act of writing was itself a ritual, intended to immortalize the prayer or the identity of the pilgrim at this high-altitude sacred site.
Αυτά τα θραύσματα ανήκουν σε λίθινες «τράπεζες προσφορών» που βρέθηκαν στο σημαντικό ιερό κορυφής του Πετσοφά. Φέρουν εγχάρακτα σημεία της Γραμμικής Α γραφής, του μη αποκρυπτογραφημένου συστήματος γραφής του μινωικού ανακτορικού πολιτισμού. Σε αντίθεση με τις διοικητικές πινακίδες Γραμμικής Α που βρίσκονται στα ανάκτορα, οι επιγραφές σε λίθινα σκεύη είναι σχεδόν αποκλειστικά θρησκευτικές, επαναλαμβάνοντας συχνά συγκεκριμένες αλληλουχίες σημείων γνωστές ως «τύπος των σπονδών». Η χρήση ενός μόνιμου υλικού όπως ο στεατίτης για αυτές τις επιγραφές υποδηλώνει ότι η ίδια η πράξη της γραφής ήταν μια τελετουργία, με σκοπό να καταστήσει αθάνατη την προσευχή ή την ταυτότητα του προσκυνητή σε αυτό το ιερό μεγάλου υψομέτρου.
