Pithamphora with Floral and Spiral Registers

This large, three-handled pithamphora is a masterclass in the "Close Style" of the Post-palatial period. The vessel's surface is meticulously divided into horizontal registers, each featuring a distinct decorative motif: large, swirling foliate patterns on the shoulder, followed by rhythmic running spirals, and finally a delicate band of stylized birds or floral buds near the base. The dense, symmetrical arrangement of these patterns is characteristic of the Late Minoan III ceramic workshops at Malia. Discovered within the wealthy context of Quartier Nu, this jar served as a prestigious container for agricultural staples, reflecting the sustained economic status and artistic continuity of the Malian elite during the 14th Century BCE.
Αυτός ο μεγάλος, τρίωτος πιθαμφορέας αποτελεί ένα εξαιρετικό δείγμα του «Πυκνού Ρυθμού» (Close Style) της Μετανακτορικής περιόδου. Η επιφάνεια του αγγείου είναι σχολαστικά χωρισμένη σε οριζόντιες ζώνες, καθεμία από τις οποίες φέρει ένα διαφορετικό διακοσμητικό μοτίβο: μεγάλα, σπειροειδή φυτικά σχέδια στον ώμο, ακολουθούμενα από ρυθμικές τρέχουσες σπείρες και, τέλος, μια λεπτή ζώνη με σχηματοποιημένα πουλιά ή μπουμπούκια κοντά στη βάση.
