Incense Burner with Perforated Cover

Late Minoan III (14th–12th Century BCE)
A ceramic incense burner consisting of a shallow bowl-base and a hemispherical, perforated lid, found in the cemetery at Kritsa and dating to 1400–1100 BCE. The lid is decorated with simple horizontal bands and features multiple small holes designed to allow the fragrant smoke of burning incense to disperse. In a funerary context, such objects were used for purification rituals and to honor the deceased, reflecting the sensory and ceremonial richness of Post-palatial Minoan religious life.
Πήλινο θυμιατήριο που αποτελείται από μια ρηχή βάση και ένα ημισφαιρικό, διάτρητο κάλυμμα, από το νεκροταφείο της Κριτσάς, που χρονολογείται στον 14ο–12ο αι. π.Χ. Το κάλυμμα κοσμείται με απλές οριζόντιες ταινίες και φέρει πλήθος μικρών οπών, σχεδιασμένων για να επιτρέπουν τη διάχυση του αρωματικού καπνού του θυμιάματος. Σε ταφικό πλαίσιο, τέτοια αντικείμενα χρησιμοποιούνταν για τελετουργίες καθαρμού και για την απόδοση τιμών στον νεκρό, αντανακλώντας τον αισθητηριακό και τελετουργικό πλούτο της θρησκευτικής ζωής της Μετανακτορικής Κρήτης.
