The Parthenon — Frederic Edwin Church
Oil on canvas
The Parthenon, Acropolis of Athens
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York · Athens, Greece · 1871 CE (19th century)
American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church created this monumental painting following his visit to Athens in 1869, during which he made numerous sketches and oil studies of the Acropolis. Completed in 1871, the painting depicts the Parthenon illuminated by warm afternoon light, with fallen column fragments and architectural remains in the foreground. The work combines detailed architectural observation with the atmospheric qualities of nineteenth-century Romantic landscape painting.
