Horse and Jockey

Artemision Jockey. Bronze, c. 140 BCE.

The statue was retrieved in pieces from the shipwreck of Artemision off the north coast of Euboea. The jockey would have held the reins in his left hand and a wipe in his right (now missing). Both the jockey and horse facial expressions reveal the excitement of speed. It was reconstructed in its present state in 1971.
