Stele of Theogeneta. From eastern Greece. Marble. Hellenistic period, 3d c. BCE.

To a Young Deceased Woman
"The one allotted beauty envied among mortals,
Theophila, the tenth of the Muses,
a Grace for her spouse,
the very image of prudence,
Hades did not selze you with his swarthy hands
but Pluto has lit the wedding torches
with his lamp,
receiving a most longed-for spouse.
Parents, leave now the dirges, cease from your lamenting;
Theophlla has reached an Immortal's bed."
