Mycenae: Underground Cistern Entryway

Corbelled construction of the underground cistern entryway. late 13th c. BCE.

Access to the underground cistern is via a corralled construction steep staircase that leads to the water below. It is an impressive engineering feat that allowed the citadel unlimited and secure water supply. The underground water pool was supplied through underground pipes from a nearby natural spring. Mycenae Archaeological site. Peloponnese, Greece.
