Grave Stele of Philika

This elaborate Hellenistic stele marks the grave of a woman named PHILIKA (ΦIΛIKA), daughter of ARISTONOS (APIΣTΩNOΣ), whose names are carved in relief at the top. The monument is richly decorated with symbolic funerary motifs: a frieze of mourning Sirens—mythical bird-women who served as guardians of the dead—alternating with stylized floral patterns. Below this, a wide necklace consisting of three rows of schematic fruit beads drapes across the stone. At the bottom, a medallion depicts Scylla, the sea monster, flanked by two armlets, likely referencing the hazardous journey of the soul or the personal adornments of the deceased.

Αυτή η περίτεχνη ελληνιστική στήλη σηματοδοτεί τον τάφο μιας γυναίκας με το όνομα ΦΙΛΙΚΑ, κόρης του ΑΡΙΣΤΩΝΟΣ, τα ονόματα των οποίων είναι λαξευμένα ανάγλυφα στην κορυφή. Το μνημείο είναι πλούσια διακοσμημένο με συμβολικά ταφικά μοτίβα: μια ζωφόρο με θρηνούσες Σειρήνες—μυθικές μορφές που λειτουργούσαν ως φύλακες των νεκρών—που εναλλάσσονται με σχηματοποιημένα ανθέμια. Χαμηλότερα, ένα πλατύ περιδέραιο από τρεις σειρές σχηματοποιημένων καρπών εκτείνεται κατά πλάτος του λίθου. Στο κάτω μέρος, ένα μετάλλιο απεικονίζει τη Σκύλλα, το θαλάσσιο τέρας, πλαισιωμένη από δύο ψέλια (βραχιόλια), αναφορές ίσως στο επικίνδυνο ταξίδι της ψυχής ή στα προσωπικά κοσμήματα της νεκρής.
