The theater at Bouthroton (Butrint) was originally constructed in the mid-3rd century BCE during the Hellenistic period. Built into the hillside between the Sanctuary of Asclepius and a Greek stoa, its initial construction date is firmly established by a dedicatory inscription and numerous manumission texts carved onto the western parodos and diazoma.
The complex was later significantly remodeled, expanded, and given a monumental stone stage building by the Romans during the imperial era.
