The Ancient Theater of Delphi
The cavea (seating area) and retaining wall of the ancient theater
Delphi Archaeological Site c. 4th Century BCE (Late Classical / Hellenistic Period)
Viewed from the level of the orchestra, the expansive *cavea* of the Ancient Theater of Delphi sweeps upward into the natural slope of Mount Parnassos. The sturdy polygonal and ashlar masonry of the retaining wall (*analemma*) is prominently visible on the right, supporting the terraced seating. Situated just above the Temple of Apollon, this venue provided seating for thousands of spectators attending the musical and dramatic contests of the Pythian Games.
