Ornate Table from Akrotiri
Bronze Age Table

Plaster cast of carved wooden table from Akrotiri. 17th c. BCE.

The volcanic ash preserved the shape of the table for about 3600 years. While the ash solidified around it, the wood itself deteriorated leaving a hollow form of the exact shape of the original table. Archaeologists poured plaster into the cavity to reveal the original shape of the table.
Exhibited at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera (Santorini), Greece.
