Το Ancient-Greece.org αποτελεί ερευνητικό πόρο και φωτογραφικό αρχείο αφιερωμένο στη συστηματική μελέτη της ελληνικής αρχαιότητας, από τη Λίθινη Εποχή έως τη Ρωμαϊκή Αυτοκρατορική Περίοδο.

Το Πλαίσιο Μελέτης: ΦΙΛ

Το πλαίσιο του έργου καθορίζεται από τη σύνθεση οπτικών, χωρικών και κειμενικών τεκμηρίων:

• Φῶς: Αντιπροσωπεύει την οπτική αποτύπωση και το φωτογραφικό αρχείο.
• Ἴχνος: Υποδηλώνει το φυσικό αποτύπωμα, την κάτοψη ή τον χάρτη που παραμένει στο έδαφος.
• Λέξη: Περιλαμβάνει τον γραπτό λόγο, την αιτία και το επιστημονικό άρθρο που συνθέτει τα δεδομένα.

Τα αρχικά γράμματα σχηματίζουν το ακρονήμιο ΦΙΛ-, που μια βαθιά αγάπη για το αντικείμενο που αντιπροσοπεύει.

Μέσα από αυτή την προσέγγιση, ο ιστότοπος αναδεικνύει τα σωζόμενα φυσικά τοπία και τα τεχνουργήματα όπως αυτά παρουσιάζονται σε αρχαιολογικά μουσεία και χώρους. Τα φωτογραφικά τεκμήρια πλαισιώνονται από πρωτότυπα δοκίμια για την παροχή ιστορικού πλαισίου, με στόχο να αποτελέσουν τόσο οπτικό ερέθισμα για το κοινό όσο και χρήσιμη πηγή υλικού για την επιστημονική κοινότητα.

Συντακτικό και Νομικό Πλαίσιο

Το Ancient-Greece.org είναι μια ανεξάρτητη ερευνητική έκδοση που δημιουργήθηκε και δημοσιεύεται από τον Θωμά Σακούλα, καθηγητή και πρώην πρόεδρο του Τμήματος Τεχνών στο State University of New York at Oneonta. Ως δημιουργός του περιεχομένου, επιμελείται όλα τα οπτικά στοιχεία, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του σχεδιασμού ιστοσελίδων, της φωτογραφίας, των γραφικών και των χαρτών, καθώς και των συνοδευτικών κειμένων.

Επαγγελματικά Προσόντα

The structure of ancient-greece.org is built upon three pillars represented by the Greek prefix ΦΙΛ- (Phil-), which denotes a deep-seated affinity for a subject, and approaches the study of Ancient Greece through visual clarity, physical context, and intellectual rigor.

Φῶς (Phos) | Light: Photographs. Represented by Φ, this pillar focuses on the role of light in documenting material culture. Through original photography, the site captures the interplay of Mediterranean light and ancient form, providing a clear visual record of artifacts and architecture

Ἴχνος (Ichnos) | Trace: Maps. Represented by Ἴ, this pillar signifies the physical footprint or map traced upon the earth. By mapping these “traces” across the landscape—from urban centers to remote outposts—the framework provides the spatial context necessary to understand historical movement and settlement.

Λέξη (Lexi) | Word: Articles. Represented by Λ, this pillar provides the scholarly foundation. The “word” serves as the bridge between the visual and the physical, synthesizing archaeological data into an academic narrative that preserves history for future generations.

Through this approach, the site highlights surviving physical landscapes and artifacts as they appear in archaeological museums and sites. These photographic records are paired with original essays to provide historical context, aiming to serve as both a visual resource for the public and a primary source of materials for scholars.

Established in 2002, this platform is currently in its third edition (2024).

Editorial and Legal Framework

Ancient-Greece.org is an independent research publication and is not affiliated with any government entity or external website. The project is created and published by Thomas Sakoulas, Professor and former Chair of the Art Department at the State University of New York at Oneonta. As the author of the site’s content, he oversees all visual elements, including web design, photography, graphics, and maps, as well as the accompanying scholarly text.

Professional Qualifications

The project is informed by a multi-disciplinary background in fine arts, education, and digital technology. Thomas Sakoulas holds an MFA in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art (Rinehart School of Sculpture, ’92) and has served as a university professor since 1999, attaining the rank of Professor and serving five years as Department Chair. His instructional expertise encompasses Sculpture, Stone Carving, Bronze Casting, and Digital Design (including CAD/CAM, UI, and photography), complemented by an extensive background in Art History. He maintains an active studio practice exploring geometric abstraction and classical motifs, which can be viewed at sakoulas.com. Furthermore, he has led specialized University travel classes to archaeological sites and museums in Italy and Greece, and his technical documentation as well as his research on the diachronicity of the Greek landscape have been presented in scholarly publications and conferences.
