Nikopolis Archaeological Museum

Το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Νικόπολης (the Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis) hosts Roman and Byzantine finds from the nearby ancient city of Nikopolis. It exhibits objects and art from the excavations in the expanded area around the ancient city founded by Augustus in 31 BCE.

Base with Greek Gods

Semi-circular marble base with low relief depicting gods from the Greek pantheon. Found at the Monument of Augustus and it is believed that it was part of the decorations of the Altar of Apollo.

From left to right it depicts: Athena, Hercules, Hera or Hebes, Three Graces or Nymphs, Hermes, Leto, Artemis, Apollo.

Pedestal with Roman and Byzantine Art

Pedestal of a statue with Byzantine Mosaic of Saints Over Roman Amazonomachy Relief.

The pedestal was created initially by the Romans (1st-2nd c. CE). In Byzantine times (5th – 6th c. CE) it was covered with a Christian mosaic and used as an ambo in Basilica B in Nikopolis.
